Spotify & Netflix square up to challenge YouTube
Spotify and Netflix are teaming up to take on YouTube’s dominance in video podcasts. Starting in early 2026, Netflix will stream around 16 Spotify video podcasts, including The Bill Simmons Podcast, The Rewatchables, and The Zach Lowe Show in the U.S., with a global rollout planned later.
Full episodes won’t appear on YouTube, only short clips for promotion, signaling a clear competitive move. For Spotify, it’s an acknowledgment that catching YouTube’s massive video scale alone is impossible, while for Netflix, it’s a way to expand beyond scripted content into creator-driven talk formats as it leans further into ads. The partnership also hints at a future Spotify–Netflix bundle combining music, podcasts, and video, much like Apple and Amazon already do.
With video podcasts becoming a new frontier for attention and ad dollars, this alliance marks the start of a serious push to challenge YouTube’s grip on both creators and viewers.
